Creating the Conditions for Good Design | Affordable Housing Workshop
Site visit during our first workshop
Join us for an interactive half-day workshop exploring how clients can create the conditions for good design during the early stages of affordable housing developments.
Many of the decisions that have the greatest influence on the quality of affordable housing are made before a design team is appointed. Developing a clear understanding of the people and place, establishing a shared vision and project principles, and ensuring the procurement process reflects those ambitions can create stronger foundations for successful projects.
Following the positive response to our first workshop in July, we are running a further session in Cardiff. Through presentations, a site visit, practical group exercises and discussion, participants will explore some of the key ingredients that can inform a strong project brief and support better design outcomes.
Using a development site in Cardiff Bay as a case study, participants will consider the needs of future residents and the existing community, explore the site’s opportunities and constraints, and use placemaking principles to develop a site-specific vision and project principles. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to share experiences of procuring design teams and consider whether procurement processes support the design ambitions established through the brief.
The workshop draws on the Placemaking Wales Charter and our Site and Context Analysis Guide and Introduction to Brief Writing Guide, alongside our experience from Design Review and supporting affordable housing projects.

The workshop is intended for those involved in commissioning and delivering affordable housing, including housing associations, local authorities, Welsh Government and other public sector organisations, particularly those responsible for shaping projects, preparing briefs and appointing design teams.
Participants will leave with practical ideas and approaches that they can apply to the early stages of their own affordable housing projects.
