The bowl of land at the very bottom of Wales is known as the Vale of Glamorgan, a rich, pastoral land of gentle countryside shelving down to a cliff-ridden coastline, punctuated by long, sandy beaches. The Vale does not feature on many visitors' itineraries as most speed through from Cardiff to Swansea, the Gower and the west. This is a shame though, for the quiet and pretty towns, together with the sheer profusion of excellent beaches and tumbledown castles warrant a good couple of days' exploration.
