Information is submitted on potential case studies by the lead designer for a project. The project may have been brought to our attention because it is an award winner, or it is felt to be a good example of its type. The case study is reviewed by the Commissions' Case Study Assessment Team who interrogates the information supplied, together with completing a site visit, wherever possible.
A good case study is a project which provides a high standard of design responding positively to the context in which it is placed. This not only relates to the external appearance of a building or space, but includes its fitness for purpose, environmental performance, social and economic sustainability, responsiveness to user needs and the aspirations of the local and national community.
The Commission provides a brief evaluation of each case study outlining why it considers the project to be an exemplar, its strengths and weaknesses in response to the fundamentals of good design.
What do others say about this development?
It is also important for us to get feedback from clients, designers and users about the successes and failure of the project where we can.
This team of professionals meets regularly to review and discuss the case studies under preparation, it is chaired by the Development Director and comprises of a Commissioner, Design Review Panel Member, Advocates in Practice and our Programme Assistant.
The Commission also identifies other projects outside Wales that are exemplars of good practice, these are included on the ‘What is being built outside Wales?' page.
